HOW IT WORKS
Publishing a high-quality book requires an investment from the author, no matter which path you choose to take. To help you map out your journey, we have summarized the costs and expectations associated with each publishing option below. As with any major milestone, it is vital to understand your upfront costs and exactly what to expect in return.
You don’t just have to take our word for it—feel free to explore the data compiled by WordsRated, a non-commercial research organization dedicated to discovering insightful, independent data about books and the publishing industry.
Path 1: Traditional Publishing (You Pay on the Back End)
Whether your book is picked up by one of the "Big Five" publishing houses or a smaller independent press, your financial investment is made on the back end. Traditional publishers "front" the initial cost of producing your book, but they collect that money back by taking a massive percentage (82% to 95%) of the profits generated from your sales.
If you are offered an advance—which is often as little as $1,000 for debut authors—that exact amount must be fully repaid to the publisher from your book's earnings before you ever see a single royalty check. Additionally, if a literary agent lands you the deal, you will owe them 15% of everything you earn.
Furthermore, modern traditional publishers shift the vast majority of marketing responsibilities directly onto the author's shoulders. Unless you are already a household name, you can expect little more than a couple of automated promotional emails sent to their mailing list. Any substantial marketing or book touring will usually be paid for out of your own pocket.
Path 2: Independent Self-Publishing (You Pay As You Go)
When you self-publish entirely on your own, you invest as you go and recoup your costs directly from your retail sales. While you can try to cut down your financial investment by handling every single step yourself, cutting corners often causes the final product—and your sales numbers—to suffer.
Unless you have years of deep industry experience, navigation errors happen. In publishing, there is a significant financial cost to getting things wrong and having to redo them. Publishing correctly is highly complex. It is not just about designing a cover; it requires finding the right metadata, keyword strings, and genre category codes, crafting an irresistible book blurb, formatting files seamlessly, and building a cohesive final product.
Giving a self-published book its best chance at success means sourcing outside experts. However, vetting individual professionals can be incredibly stressful, not to mention managing multiple separate contracts and conflicting timelines. Unfortunately, the industry is full of service providers with questionable skills who may take advantage of independent authors.
Highly qualified professional expertise is a significant investment. According to WordsRated, here is a quick breakdown of just a few standard out-of-pocket expenses you can expect when sourcing independently:
Copy Editing: $1,080 – $1,714
Proofreading: $620 – $955
Cover Design, Formatting, & Layout: $2,300 – $3,750
Blurb & Bio Developmental Editing: $150 – $500
Keyword & Amazon/B&N Category Optimization: $300 – $800
Global Distribution Platform Uploading: $300 – $1,500
Official ISBNs: $250 for a pair

Quill and Compass Hybrid Publishing
Our Core Publishing Package
Once your manuscript or concept is accepted for representation by Quill & Compass, we operate on a flexible sliding scale of $150 to $550 paid at the start of the production process.
Because every book is unique, we don't believe in a one-size-fits-all fee. If your manuscript is polished and ready to format, you’ll land at the lower end of the scale. If your project isn’t quite at the finish line, exceeds standard length, or needs extra care to get it ready for prime time, the fee adjusts accordingly to cover the extra production hours. Whichever flat fee we agree on upfront, you keep 60% of the profits.
What Our Flat Fee Covers
The In-House Advantage: We offer both in-house solutions and external partner options. Utilizing our talented in-house services keeps you entirely within your agreed-upon upfront fee ($150 – $550). While external, highly specialized options are paid directly to those creators and are not covered by our fee, we will happily connect you with our list of preferred professionals. Note: When you work with outside teams you will still have a fee with us.
Editorial Review & Support
If your submission requires extra structural or developmental editing to meet publication standards, we will let you know right away. We offer both in-house editing solutions (covered by your flat fee) and external options. While extensive, external editing is paid separately, we will happily provide a list of our preferred professional editors. If you choose to work with them, your publication is guaranteed. Quill & Compass does not profit from our preferred editors' fees, and we will keep your project moving by handling other production elements while your editing is underway. You are always welcome to hire an independent editor of your own and resubmit, though we cannot guarantee automatic acceptance without a review from our team.
Word Count Adjustments & Trim Support
If your manuscript exceeds our standard word count limits and needs to be condensed or reshaped to fit the text block, we offer in-house trimming and adjustment services at no extra charge. Because this requires substantial structural restructuring, utilizing this free option requires giving our in-house writing team creative freedom to make the necessary narrative adjustments. If you prefer line-by-line control over every single edit, we can connect you with experienced writers from our trusted professional network to help you trim the manuscript before production. For external writers, you will collaborate and handle payment directly.
Custom Artwork Connections
If you require specialized, custom illustrative artwork outside of the high-quality design assets regularly provided by Quill & Compass, we have two paths forward. We offer select in-house artwork options at no additional charge. For highly specialized requests, you will receive full access to our directory of trusted partner artists. You will work with and pay these external artists directly—we never take a cut or stand in the way of your creative collaboration.
Ghostwriting & Concept Development
Have a brilliant concept but need someone else to hold the pen? If you are starting from a rough outline or a collection of notes, we can help. We provide in-house ghostwriting options completely free of charge; to utilize this service, authors must allow our in-house creative team the necessary creative freedom to shape and develop the narrative effectively. Alternatively, if you prefer strict, direct control over every line, we can connect you with experienced ghostwriters from our trusted professional network. For external writers, you will collaborate and handle payment directly. Because we do not take a commission or profit from their fees, you get a direct, pure creative partnership while we prepare the rest of your publishing pipeline.
The Finished Product
Our team expertly handles all the logistics—including production, global distribution, professional formatting, press releases, and strategic marketing support. We don't leave you stranded; we provide the expert tools and guidance you need to market your book like a seasoned professional.
